Orchids are gorgeous flowering plants, many of which are tropical and some of which are epiphytes, or aerial plants. The aerial orchids cling to rocks or other plants and derive their moisture from the air and rain, so they need a humid climate in which to grow. Growing orchids in your greenhouse involves some extra attention, especially if you are in the wrong climate for them. To care properly for your hothouse orchids, there are a few tips to follow.
As the orchids cling to the tree trunk amid the moisture in the air they absorb the nutrients they need for survival and healthy growth. In the greenhouse, some potting mix added to their environs will keep them healthy and growing. With the potent combination of orchid fertilizer and potting mix many orchids will bloom for days on end.
Orchids need to be watered thoroughly at least twice a week but they need to have humidity and moisture daily in order to remain healthy. You can keep them in their proper element by placing them on top of a humidity tray or misting them lightly every day. A humidity tray is easy to set up: just place some stones or pebbles on the bottom of a shallow tray. Then add some water, but not enough to cover the stones, so that the bottom of the orchid pot doesn’t touch the water. Keep an eye on the tray and add more water whenever it gets too low.
A greenhouse has a tendency to become overheated pretty easily even though by design it remains high in humidity. If this is the case, the orchid will need some ventilation from time to time. Be sure you have a window or vent in your structure that allows fresh air to enter and cool things down a bit, while also reviving the stale air.
You also need to know that orchids need a period of darkness each day if they are to thrive and flower, just like they get in their natural habitat. So be sure to provide several hours of darkness every night by turning off all lights in and around the greenhouse.
