My husband and I just bought our first house (a townhouse actually). Landscaping is *supposed to* be covered by the HOA… but they do absolutely nothing. The grass is above ankle high, the bushes are overgrown, there is trash all over the entrance to the neighborhood, weeds everywhere, etc. According to the HOA booklet we got, we can plant any flowers/plants we want as long as they don’t get in the way of our neighbors.
I want to plant flowers, not bushes. I know absolutely nothing though… The flowerbed is on the east side of the house, so it’s sunny in the mornings up till noon-ish. There is no hose, so we’ll have to use a watering can (no problem). Today we spent hours digging out weeds & saturating the ground with Round Up.
Where do I go from here? Should I add more soil? What kind of mulch is best? What kind of flowers will add color & survive most types of weather? I was thinking of pansies, gerber daisies, and maybe some merigolds or something like that. But I really don’t know how durable any of those are. Do they need to be destroyed & new ones replanted every year?
D.G.– the reason we bought this house is b/c my husband and I together have about $130,000 in student loans and this was the best house in the nicest area we could afford. I don’t mind working on it. In fact, I’ve been enjoying all the remodeling. Plus, we moved in mid-February on a 20 degree day. I thought it was just dead/weedy/unkempt b/c it’s so cold.
